Diagnose and classify pre-operative anaemia, and choose oral versus intravenous iron.

New iron-deficiency anaemia may need investigation of a source (e.g. GI). Not a substitute for clinical judgement.

Enter in g/L (e.g. 112), not g/dL. WHO/NICE anaemia: <130 (men), <120 (women), <110 (pregnant).

Source: CPOC Anaemia Guideline 2025. Assess Hb ≥6 weeks before surgery; battery of tests: FBC, ferritin, T-Sat, CRP, B12/folate, U&E. Oral iron ~4 weeks to work; IV iron if time short, oral not tolerated, or functional deficiency.
